This is not Pretty in Pink

I can't imagine a time where I never wanted to be a big girl. You can say Sweet 16, Pretty in Pink, and Dirty Dancing made it seem being a big girl was the best feeling in the world.

As I got older I figured this meant getting a car and taking on the freedom that it brings. I pictured myself driving a red convertible, chewing my gum fiercely, with the wind blowing through my hair as I pull up to school. This did not turn out as I expected. Though my car is red, it isn't a convertible, and I have to wiggle my wheel and key to get it started. I also learned I don't like driving with my windows down so there will definitely be no wind blowing through my hair.

Being a big girl is way different than I expected. The freedom that it brings is earned, and that is something I'm still in the process of learning. I can't do things if I don't have gas, which I need money for, which you get by earning it at a job. I wish things were different. As a matter of fact, I feel that being a big girl has less freedom because you have more priorities. Life's a bliss when the only thing you have to worry about is what doll you want to play with.

I miss not having to worry about job applications, or college applications. I miss being able to wake up and instantly run outside and play with my siblings, even though we could only go so far, to me that was true freedom because I had no worries. I'm sorry Dirty Dancing, but you’re a lie. Growing up and meeting the boy of your dreams, being a big girl, sneaking away at night, growing up is not what those movies make it out to seem.

  1. This is so true Shay, growing up sucks. All my life I wanted to just grow up, get a job, and get lots of money. Yeahhhh, that’s not how it works. At least we realize that, some people don’t. Some people graduate and haven’t had a job and don’t know what the real world is like. They still think it’s like Dirty Dancing. I feel like life is so hard and there are so many things to worry about, it’s almost impossible to be happy. Others don’t know how this feels; they won’t until it hits them hard after high school when they are trying to start their lives. As much as it does suck, we, along with all of the others who have held jobs and know just how hard life is, are ahead of the game. We can prepare and be ready for the hardships that are to come instead of having no idea and being ignorant to life as an adult.

  2. I thoroughly remember the times of me being young and so absolutely carefree. Sure I had some problems but they never mattered because I couldn't consider them all that serious. Now, I have a job to maintain, grades, my car, relationships and more. This is the reality of many kids our age now as it becomes more apparent that the struggles of life cannot be avoided. It is good though to revel in the fact that we made it all this way and can continue on if we don't let our problems hold us back.

  3. It’s an interesting thought that as we age we always try to imagine ourselves older. That is a kinda confusing statement so I will explain. Like you said, when we are young we can’t wait to grow up. We are always looking to the future and hoping that our life will someday be like the movies. We eventually realize that our life is nothing like the movies and it to some that can become a little disheartening. But, even though many of our lives has never been as we expected we still look and dream toward the future. I dream of being a doctor, traveling the world, being wealthy, so it makes me a little nervous to think that there is a possibility that these dreams won’t come true because my expectations and dreams haven’t been met a lot of the times. I also miss not having to worry about adult issues, but I think that we should try and enjoy them. Each age brings a new excitement. Personally, college is my new excitement this year. And although it seems a little intimidating to fill out all of these applications, I know that the hard work leading up to college will pay off.
